2019 Championship – Entries Open!

WORLD PORRIDGE MAKING CHAMPIONSHIP – CARRBRIDGE, 11 – 12 October 2019

The countdown for the 2019 World Porridge Making Championships, held at the Village Hall in the Highland Village of Carrbridge, is on.
This year, for the first time, competition will be spread over two days. Friday’s ‘Silver Spurtle’ competition (11 October) is reserved for Young Persons (ages 8-16); Saturday’s ‘Golden Spurtle’ (12 October) is for adults.

The championships are a celebration of oats and porridge making. They showcase a food whose public health benefits are being promoted increasingly strongly.

This year’s organising committee are delighted that Hamlyns of Scotland have renewed their sponsorship of the event. They also welcome the increased commitment of Centurion Plumbing Services (Scotland) Ltd, who this year are sponsoring the Silver Spurtle competition.

Contestants on both Friday and Saturday will vie to produce the best ‘traditional’ porridge (oatmeal, water and salt only) and the best ‘speciality’ dish. The winner of the adult traditional competition receives the Golden Spurtle, with the award of the Silver Spurtle going to the winner of the young person judged to produce the best traditional porridge. Additional prizes are awarded to the winners of the speciality events.

Recipes for this year’s competition will be closely guarded secrets before the event.

Entries open for 2019’s competitions Saturday 10 March and close 10 June. Details of how to enter are available via the website – www.goldenspurtle.com

The event is very international and this year will have entrants who are the national winners from Germany, Ireland, Russia and Sweden.
The championships are also an example of community-led local economic development. The organising committee is entirely voluntary. It is made up of Carrbridge residents and aims to use the championships as a means to promote Carrbridge more widely.
